Maintaining your Dyson
Keeping your Dyson working is easy! Properly maintained your Dyson will make cleaning of your home a pleasure rather than a chore!
As professional domestic cleaners we use Dyson’s all the time and would not think of using anything else. They are rugged, hard working and reliable but as with any mechanical equipment regular maintenance is essential and the Dyson is no exception if you wish to keep it working properly for years and years.
Recently I was chatting to a house husband who was looking for advice on which Dyson he should buy as he now needed to replace his hoover. He had had his Dyson for an amazing 21 years and was almost heartbroken that such a trusted friend was no longer with the family. I was stunned that he had managed to keep his Dyson hoover working for such a long time and was forced to ask how he had managed to keep it working for that long.
He told me that he had made sure that his Dyson was regularly serviced by an engineer, that parts were replaced when needed along with the general servicing carried out each year at what he described was at a very reasonable cost. However it is quite easy to service your own Dyson hoover yourself as all the parts are designed to be taken apart with ease and simply popped back together. Also most of the bits are dishwasher safe which means you can keep it sparkling like new as well. To get the best performance from your Dyson remove and rinse out the filters at least 2 to 3 times a year and don’t let the clear bin get over filled.
Just one point I would like to make is that if the belt breaks you should clean the spindle with some wire wool before fitting a new belt as when they break, the belts can leave a harmful residue on the drive spindle that will ruin the new belt in no time at all. We got a new number
We have got a new number making it simpler and cheaper for you to contact us. We just don’t know why we did not think of this sooner but it was not until someone said “why don’t you get a freephone number? It cost nothing for someone to find out how you can help them.”
Mmm I thought…..what will that cost us? How will it help? and how difficult will it be to set up? So I did a bit of research, asked a few questions and spoke to a friend who had used freephone numbers before and was utterly amazed. It could not be that simple could it?
Yup it is that simple. Simple to set up and surprisingly cheep too. I don’t know why I had thought it would be difficult or expensive and what’s more it helps everyone get a better service and I like that idea a lot. My enquiries into freephone numbers highlighted a number of benefits that you might find useful if you are thinking of doing the same.

Stain removal some basic rules
Accidents do happen no matter how careful we might try to be. Knowing the best way to deal with these problems when they happen is vital. Here are a few tips that we have picked up over the years when dealing with fabric stains and we thought that it might be useful for you. Enjoy reading….
- Deal with any stain as soon as possible. The sooner you take action the easier it will be to remove the stain.
- Don’t use heat on the fabric until you have dealt with the stain as many foods contain proteins that can be made permanent by any applied heat to the stain on fabrics. Don’t be tempted to rinse or sponge with hot water or steam from a boiling kettle.
- Scrape off solid dirt and absorb any liquids as much as possible before dissolving the stain with water solvents or water and detergent working from the outside inwards to the stain.
- Test on an unseen area of fabric before applying any stain remover as sometimes the colours might run, fade or damage the fibres of the fabric.
- Try and be as delicate as possible if you need to scrape or rub a stain. don’t use a brush in a brushing action as this can damage the fabric more than the stain itself.
- Try and keep the stain face down with a pad of tissue or similar underneath to absorb as much of the stain as possible.
- If you are in any doubt about a stain or the type of material it is on you should always get it cleaned professionally to avoid doing more damage than already.
- For carpets and upholstery a stain should be sponged and patted dry alternately so as to avoid getting the area too wet.
- Always rinse well any area between different types of treatments as solvent should not be mixed together as different solvents and detergent will cancel each other out.
- Don’t be tempted to try and remove all traces of a stubborn stain as often this can damage the fabric too much making that area stand out from the rest.
- Be patient as working the cloth lightly in you fingers, rinsing and dabbing gently will work much better in the end than over zealous scrubbing or scraping.

You can take it to a small local repair man who can do the job for you at a small charge. I would not recommend one of the larger retailers as they will charge considerably more as they are generally only interested in supplying new equipment rather than repairing existing appliances.
If you are comfortable opening and cleaning the inside of your computer yourself here are a number of points that will help you to clean the dust and debris making your computer run more smoothly and efficiently. I have included a number of useful links at the end of this article for further reading and help should you require it.
First switch off the power supply, however you should beware as with any electrical equipment there is the possibility of residual current remaining in the system and I would strongly recommend that you leave it plugged in for a short while as any residual or static charge is still earthed reducing the risk to yourself and your equipment.
Once you have removed the casing it will be obvious where the dirt is. Warning! There are two schools of thought concerning cleaning the inside of a computer and I am not going to say which is right or wrong only that you must make up your own mind on this particular issue. In one camp are those who recommend using the soft brush attachment on your hoover to lightly clean the accumulated dust from fans and filters as well as the front, back or side panels. It is important that you are careful and try and avoid too much contact with the components as this may cause unnecessary damage to the computer. All you need to do is get rid of the majority of the dirt from the major areas and all the little openings which are places where dust and dirt can accumulate.
The second school of thought says that you should never use a vacuum cleaner on your computer as a hoover can creat static electricity which will easily damage the delicate components like the motherboard, hard drive or video card. Instead you should invest in a can of compressed air which is designed for cleaning computer hardware and is available at most major computer stores.
Hold the can about four inches away while keeping the fan
still with a small screwdriver or pen. Blow air from the back of the case through the fan and then all around the components inside and along the bottom using a soft bristle brush to loosen any tough patches of dust or dirt taking care to touch as little as possible.
Lastly you can clean your floppy disk and CD drives by gently blowing air into them and wipe down the inside cover with a lightly dampened cloth before replacing the cover. All this should keep your PC running smoothly for years to come.
